President’s Report – Karen Morris

OUR club is what WE all make it

What a great season with lots of new paddlers’ participating in our local and national events with a fantastic finale to the season – I’ll write more to this.  Thank you to our members and volunteers who have supported us through out the season whether it be on regatta day as a volunteer; on our Bunning’s BBQ fund raisers; or just coming down to the sheds and cooking sausages for us all.  The off-the-water support and team work is what really matters.  We have a great, culturally diverse club with people willing to help.

Our committee is a group of dedicated people that, despite all their other commitments be it work, home life or paddling, have ensured OUR club runs smoothly.  I have seen the workload spread amongst keen and very able committee members of the club. Thank you for your support this year.

Australian Premier Club Champions (Trevor Huggard award) - I have wished, hoped and dreamed that one day we would be the club holding this award.  I have watched over the years as different clubs have stood on the podium holding the ‘Chalice’ and wondered if it was ever possible.  This year we have proven that it is possible and done so very emphatically.  Never in the history of paddling has a Victorian team held this award and never in the history of paddling has this award been achieved so emphatically. YOU should all be very proud of what you have achieved.

We have continued to build the club in terms of recruiting and retaining new members; continuing the coaching and training and structure that ensures consistency (warming-up and starting on-time, boat washing, warm-down stretch and debrief). We have also expanded our range of water training boats - I’m looking forward to summer time when I can go back out and play.

Thank you all for a great season.

Paddles Up…

Club Captain’s Report – Georgina Wakim

A Dream come true for Melbourne Flames.

The energy and team commitment throughout the 2014/15 season has proven to reward us with extraordinary results.

Trusting and supporting one another as a team has been our key component to our wonderful culture. Every thing matters off the water and the rest looks after itself when we race.

We had a vision and have achieved this with Pride. Finishing our season with the honour of being the Premier Club Champions and holders of the Trevor Huggard Trophy, the first ever Victorian Club to achieve this.

In recognizing this, we acknowledge that many of our very new members dedicated time, support and fundraising activities to help Flames reach their goals this season.  Not to mention those Very new members whom decided to commit to training in such short notice and make the trip to Perth. The right attitude was there, and so were the results.

We now carry our goals onto the 2015/16 Season, being the Club Crews World Championships held in Adelaide, April 2016. This will be our first ever CCWC and we'll be ready and guided by the best leaders in the Country. Thanks to the great work of Serghei and assistant coaches.

Another monumental accomplishment for Melbourne Flames.

What an honour it’s been...Thank you Karen Morris for being a Wonderful President.

Head Coach Report

Dear Flames,

We are the Champion club in the premier division in Australia. Congratulations. At the Australian championships in Perth from 12 entries we won 10 gold and 2 silver plus our B team was very close to the finals in 200m and 500m. Also we got two gold medals in senior A category in 10’s mixed boat racing. The first time in the history of our club we had won gold medals in women’s and open races. Our mixed team dominated all races. Even when we changed a third of our mixed team the result was the same. It shows that we are starting to get a good depth of high quality paddlers in our club. The open team was the biggest and most pleasant surprise for me – two gold and one silver. Same result in our women’s team.  At the Victorian championships both our teams made finals and we won every race we entered, 11 from 11. Well done every one.

From the start of the season Melbourne Flames competed in every race in Victoria.  We won all races in Melbourne but we lost to Yarra River Dragons at the Falls creek and the Albury-Wodonga cups. It happened not because we were not ready to race or were racing badly but because we did not have enough paddlers on the days of racing.   These competitions are perfect for new members of the club to get experience and knowledge of competing.  Unfortunately mostly only experienced paddlers attended these competitions. In future we have to organise better attendance of new club members.

I have to mention the great job done by the Melbourne Flames committee in creating a good, positive atmosphere, organisation, support and recruiting new club members this season. Their excellent work made it possible to get us the results we achieved. Thank you very much for everything.

In one week seventeen Melbourne Flames members are going to represent Australia at the 12th  World championships. They are ready.

Now a little bit about the future. We have qualified to race at the Club World championships in Adelaide in April next year. Yes we are good but to get results at the Worlds we must be better.

We have a lot of work to do. Hard work.  Let’s focus on it and show the whole world what the Melbourne Flames club is capable of.

See you on the water.
