Well, it was an interesting start to the 2011-2012 season in more than one way! Spring Fest in Ballarat would also include a Dragon Boat regatta, a first off, and a creat opportunity for us to showcase the sport on Lake Wendouree!
The weather Gods were not with us on the day, drizzle in the morning, developping into showers here and there, very strong winds... and lest we forget, the cold!
The way our crews and all other clubs worked together though to make the day a success was, dare we say it, heart warming! ![]()

It was the first time Dragon Boats have raced on the old lake, and it's been a long time since there's been a decent amount of water in the lake for starters! It has been dry for almost 15 years, and only in the last few years has started to fill up again.
The day started with a lengthy delay, as no life saver and motor boats were available to help lay the start and finish buoys. Keeping warm in this period was a challenge, but at least there were a few hot coffee vendors available.
Racing itself was also a challenge, with the gusty winds, most sweeps had problems lining up the boats at the starts. The lane closest to shore was also a lot shallower, making it a hard slog in that lane for all crew racing in it.

In the end the sun did grace us for a few minutes, or was that for the RAAF Roulettes flying over?
Results were mixed for us:
- Mixed 20: 2nd place to CYSM SeaDragons
- Women 20: 2nd place to Peninsula Dragonflies
- Open 20: 2nd place to CYSM SeaDragons
- Mixed 10: 4th to Yarra River Dragons (winners)
Thanks to all who made the drive out to Ballarat, and braved all 3 elements. Next race will be Docklands December Cup. Fingers crossed for some summer weather!
