Welcome to the home of the Melbourne Flames

Melbourne Flames is a Dragon Boat club based in Docklands, Melbourne. We paddle and train hard and have a lot of fun doing it. Our coach, Serghei Cucsa, is a former scientific advisor for the Soviet Union canoeing team and the current coach of the Australian Dragon Boat Squad and his experience is reflected in the training programme of the club.

If you've never been in a dragon boat before but are looking at getting into shape, or raising your fitness to a whole new level, our coach's programme of paddling combined with no-nonsense gym will do just that.

If you're a lover of the sport and want to compete at the highest level in Australia, then Melbourne Flames will also provide you with that opportunity!

We currently have over 80 members in the club, with ages ranging from 21 to 70. Come and see what all the fuss is about for 3 free paddling sessions - no commitment, no questions asked!

DBV board election, first ever democratic vote by all Victorian clubs

We can’t stress how important this DBV Annual General Meeting is for the sport in our state. After so many years, DBV will finally open the doors for any willing registered paddler to present themselves for a board position. This in contrast to the past, where board positions were on an invitation only basis.

Coming off the back of a very successful national championships, which was put together by an organising committee made up of mainly paddlers, the intention is to now keep that positive momentum going and move the sport forward. We have a strong foundation, but the sport needs to grow in numbers, and that will require a bit of work over the next 2/3 years.

So this actually means that:
-          Paddlers can put themselves forward for board positions, we believe 9 in total

-          Clubs get a certain amount of votes each, depending on membership size.

More details will follow soon, so we’re just informing you of the date. Also, if you’re keen on putting yourself forward for a board position, contact Rene or any of the current DBV board members and we’ll make sure we’ll put you forward in time.

The Flames committee will attend, but if more members would like to join for the meeting, please let Rene know and we’ll keep you posted. We want to attend the AGM as a club with a position that supports our club’s future goals and needs, not as individuals.

More details below, the rest will follow soon.

Best wishes,

Your Melbourne Flames committee

In the news again!

Yes, after such great results as Nationals, we are only too happy to have a few more great reports on our club appear in the media around us!

Nationals 2012, success on home ground!

What a week, it was by far our most successful campaign, so well done to everyone and big thank you to all our paddlers, supporters and everyone else who has made this week such a huge success!

The best result is that everyone had a great time, working together as a team. The other great result is that after over 10 months of hard work from many people, these Championships have truly put Melbourne and Victoria back on the dragon boat map in Australia. Well done to the organizing committee! (and a smiling coach to boot!)

Regatta Report: Mile High Championships 2012

Falls Creek has always been the most anticipated regatta of the season.  It is steeped in tradition - the pre-race dinner, the vodka shots from the trophy, the push-up competition at the after-party.

This year however, new traditions were set.  Taking advantage of the four day weekend and a party planner with too much time on her hands, Falls Creek 2012 will go down in history as one of the most memorable regattas for the club.
